Review: Belif Peat Miracle Revital Mask

Unlike Kim Kardashian, I don’t have junk in my trunk (us normal folk just call it a big ass). However, I do have lots of gunk in my (facial) trunk though – the nose has its very own civilisation of blackheads, whiteheads, and what-nots. Because of this, I’ve recently become a hugeee fan of clay masks cos I love how it manages to suck allll the accumulated crap outta the pores. Plus, I’ve yet to come come across a clay mask that doesn’t work wonders for me (thankfully!).

The Packaging: Again, another sensible packaging from one of my favourite Kbeauty brands. The flat-topped cap is easy to twist open, and the wider base makes for a stable product that doesn’t topple over easily. The tub has a wide mouth so that you can dig out all the product (to the very last drop!) with your fingers/brush if need be, and has a matte finish on the exterior so that it doesn’t do the slip and slide when your hands are greasy/wet.

The Scent: A faint herbal scent that’s pretty much associated with belif products. It’s not too strong so it should appeal to most (unless you really hate nature?!).

The Texture: It’s very creamy and thick, and spreads over the skin very easily without pulling or dragging.

The Application: For a strange reason, I always slather on a pile of these sort of clay masks (to a nice thick layer) because of the twisted mentality that more is merrier (which might explain why my GlamGlow and Kiehl’s masks run out so damn fast), but for this, there’s no reason to do so. Just a moderate layer will do so. It works well, and applying too much will require a little more effort in removal cos it needs more rinsing (yes I’m a bum, and I want to scrimp on even a few seconds). Drying of the mask takes just a couple of minutes, and unlike GlamGlow/Kose , this doesn’t have that tingling sensation. It will feel slightly tighter on the skin as it dries.

The Effect: The usual clay masks that I use (GlamGlow, Kiehl’s and Kose) have a stronger “sucking” power aka a greater ability to extract dirt from deep inside the pores, but can strip the skin if used too often (fine, so I admit using it everyday is too much). However, this one seems milder by comparison – it still has the ability to help clarify the skin’s clogged pores, but I’d say it’s about 75% of GlamGlow/Kiehls’ efficacy. However, it is a lot more moisturising and hydrating –  to the extent that I can use it everyday and it leaves my skin feeling slightly smoother and more hydrated.

The Verdict: Suitable for those who have slightly drier skin types and still want to have a clarifying process – this is something I use everyday (which may or may not be the most recommended application method), but still gives me rather healthy and radiant skin. It is worth noting that it’s also the most affordable of all the deep cleansing purifying masks I have (GlamGlow Tingexfoliate ($92), Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Cleansing Masque ($50ish) and Kose Infinity Pure Advance Deep Clear Mask ($55)), especially if you take into account the fact that a little goes a long way for this product.

Review: Belif Velvety Coat Hand Cream

When I was on my trip for Laneige’s Global Beauty Camp, I learned from one of the other journos that your hands are the first signs of age betrayal (and here I was thinking it’d be the neck or the eyes). Ah well. In any case, it doesn’t matter – your body deserves to be taken care of from top to toe, and this includes your hands. It’s important that you have a good hand cream to keep them moisturised and line-free, especially in this age of non-stop texting and Candy Crushing.

belif velvety coat hand cream (2)

I say…

The Packaging: It’s a larger-than-normal tube of hand cream, measuring in at 12.5cm (cap included) and about 4.5cm wide. It’s pretty stable cos of the rounded cap bottom, (that, along with its 60ml weightage). It’s pretty fuss-free and simple.

The Application: Well, this is a no-brainer – simply twist open the cap and squeeze out the hand cream through the tiny little hole (which allows for an appropriate amount to be dispensed).

The Scent: I love the scent – a good mix of herbal products that don’t overpower the senses. It smells somewhat like the other belif products as well.

The Texture: It’s a medium-weight cream that helps in hydrating and rejuvenating tired dry hands. However, there is a very slight remnant layer on the skin despite repeated masssaging in of the product. There’s a slight sheen over the skin (which I’m guessing is some film to help seal in the moisture), but I’m not a fan of this. Also, I noticed that when I went to wash my hands, I could feel a distinct residual layer of hand cream over my skin (kinda more slippery, like residual conditioner that wasn’t cleansed off).

The Verdict: Yes, it helps to hydrate and soothe the skin on the hands after they’ve been through a typing storm, and yes, I do love the scent. It also has a huge volume that could probably last the entire year, especially if you take into account the fact that a little droplet can go a long, long way.  However, it has a somewhat medium-heavy texture that I’m not particularly a fan of – I like my hand creams to make do like Superman – in and out without a trace. I’m also not particularly fond of that residual layer when I wash my hands, so I’m probably gonna give this one a pass (as in passing it on to those who are in greater need of moisture). I personally still prefer Laneige’s Hand Creams.

What is tincture?

A traditional herbal extraction method to extract the efficacies of herbs in their most original form to ensure its quality and freshness.

Main Herb | Chamomile

Commonly known as “The Plant Doctor”, Chamomile has been widely used to aid the growth and health of other plants growing nearby. The German Chamomile was chosen for its natural anti-inflammatory and soothing efficacies.

Review: Belif The True Tincture of Chamomile

I know I’ve said it once, but I will say it again – there are very few brands that have earned my undying trust, and belif is one of them. I do try tonnes of products on my skin for my review purposes, but I usually do it with some sense of trepidation – “will this give me pimples?”, “will this cause cystic acne?” and  “will I get rashes?” are just a few of the thoughts running through my head as I gingerly dab the first few droplets of a product onto my skin for the very first time. Thankfully with Belif, I never have that sort of hesitation. Now I know that the packaging may not be the most attractive, but it really does work well.

I say…

The Packaging: It comes in an angular glass bottle with a stoppered top (remove before first usage), and a screw-on cap. (again, what’s with the glass bottles for such products – somebardy tell me whyyyyyyy~~~)

The Scent: It has a herbal scent that sort of reminds me of a cough mixture. It’s not unpleasant though.

The Application: You can choose to apply it onto your face using just your fingertips, or using a cotton pad, onto freshly-cleansed skin.

The Texture: It’s a watery liquid that’s quickly and easily absorbed into the skin. As you can tell from the photos above, there’s no sticky/greasy afterfeel.

The Verdict: This is a concentrated extract of Chamomile, which is said to have soothing and skin-healing properties. To me, I use this as a treatment toner – similar to Sum 37 Secret Programming Essence, Kiehl’s Iris Activating Treatment Essence, IOPE Bio Essence Intensive Conditioning etc etc. It leaves the skin feeling softer and more hydrated, but more importantly, in the long run, it helps up your skin’s health levels. You’ll find that your skin is less prone to redness and irritation (I have a good friend who attests to this!), and there’s barely any breakout caused by this. I highly recommend this for all skin types – whether you’ve got sensitive, oily, dry, or combi skin, this is one product that may not seem to have any instant benefits, but is more of an investment in good skin in the long haul. (Psst: I even heard that this product has sold out, so go get yours if you manage to find a bottle!)

Review: Belif The True Tincture Mask Chamomile

Nong, nong ago, there was a land and time when I didn’t give two hoots about the skin and thought that calming the skin meant rubbing ice cubes on the skin. It did work to a certain extent I suppose, but these days, I know that beauty (as well as the skin irritation) goes beyond the surface of the skin. These days, whenever my skin gets irritated, I soothe it with this mask.

I say…

The Packaging: It comes in the usual Belif tub – flat base with a screw-on cap that looks vaguely like a top hat. It’s stable, gives a good grip and is pretty much a simple design.

The Scent: It has a mild herbal scent that’s somewhat similar to that of the tincture. It’s soothing and non-irritating.

The Texture: It’s a lightweight gel texture that applies easily and glides across the skin. It holds some little bits in it, which are chamomile petals. They’re really minute so it doesn’t really have any abrasive effect on the skin (and not that you should be enthusiastically rubbing it all over your skin!). Simply apply a layer over your freshly-washed damp skin, leave it for 10 mins and it will gradually be absorbed into the skin (but not completely). Rinse off any remaining product with warm water, finish off with cold water, and then continue with your daily skincare regime.

The Verdict: My skin feels distinctly more hydrated, softer and smoother. I’d also say it’s calmed down (if it were red and irritated before application). Some might find it slightly tedious to have to rinse off (in this age of throw-away sheet masks as well as leave-on overnight sleeping masks), but hey, just think – it’s a few extra steps to your daily step count. Personally, I find this perfect for use after those home extractions (I know, I know, I should not be picking at my face, but I just can’t resist squeezing that almost-there blackhead out). Overall, a decent mask to use during the hot months as well as during the hazy months, and for those with sensitive and easily-flushed skin types.

Review: Belif Moisture Bomb Cushion

How was your CNY long weekend everybardy? I’m exhausted and honestly, really glad that it’s over. I belong to one of those families who have to do the visiting – in fact, I kinda envy those who just stay home and wait for the relatives to arrive, cos then it’ll give me a chance to use this product from Belif heh.

Belif Moisture bomb cushion 2

Belif moisture bomb cushion 3A little something special – a plastic sheet separating the sticker seal from the cushion. All of the other cushions I’ve tried so far don’t have this little extra touch – I guess this caters to those who are a little iffy about hygiene and don’t feel particularly comfortable about the adhesive portion of the sticker being in contact with the cushion (although to be fair, it should not be touching the cushion much cos it’s placed on the rim which is slightly higher than the cushion portion).

BELIF moisture bomb cushion 8

BELIF moisture bomb cushion 9Photos taken about 30 minutes after application, so the coverage level is still obvious

I say…

The Packaging: Well, it comes in the usual BB Cushion compact casing which shouldn’t be much of a stranger to you by now – round compact casing with an inbuilt mirror as well as a tray that functions as an airlock as well as a sponge-holder tray. Now the BB cushion portion feels denser than the usual BB cushions too – it feels like it holds more product and isn’t so soft and squishy.

The Scent: Very distinctively Belif scent – non-fragrant but more of a scented herbal scent.

The Texture: It is true to its name – there’s a whole lotta moisture in this BB cushion. When applied to the skin, it feels cooling and distinctively hydrating. It’s said to bring you 26 hours of moisture with its comfrey leaf ingredient, and I believe them😀 It’s not particularly watery to the point that it’s dripping down your skin though. In terms of coverage – it’s rather minimal with some blemishes covered. As you can tell, some of my blemishes can still be seen, and the dark eye circles are clearly visible (even after 3 layers).  It’s slightly dewy (but not superbly shiny).

The Verdict:  I personally wouldn’t use it  because of its low coverage, which means my dark panda eyes will make me look like the Walking Dead instead of a walking babe. Yes my skin did feel / remain hydrated even after 3 hours in a dry airconditioned office, but I did notice the coverage level dropping as well, which necessitated a touch-up even before I could go out for lunch. I’d say this is great for:

  1. usage in countries with dry climates / winter days,
  2. those with relatively good skin condition due to its low coverage level (you know, for for days when you wanna try pulling off the “I’m not wearing makeup” trick. hurhurhur)
  3. for ladies who have drier skin types
  4. those who prefer a much lower aka natural finish
